Nanaimo is a community rich in history that proudly starts with the Snuneymuxw and Snaw-Naw-As First Nations communities who inhabited the area for millennia. Their rich traditions and art are seen throughout the city that they share with 100,000 non-Indigenous residents.
In the 1850’s, Nanaimo became a hub for logging and mining, and has continued to grow to include tourism, technology, arts, forestry, and services sectors. The city boasts multiple museums like the Nanaimo Museum, The Bastion, Vancouver Island Military Museum, and the Museum of Natural History.
